Forum - General - Number ones in the Twenty Tens

The chart in the 2010's was a Top 40. Chart rules omitted collaborating artists from having a number one. (i.e. an artist with the words featuring, vs or presents is considered a collaborating artist). Only duets are considered to be hits (using the words ‘and’ and ‘with’). The rule came into effect mid way through 2011.

Ed Sheeran releases two new singles and takes them both into the Top 2 this week. Shape Of You (also #1 in Wales) and Castle On The Hill are from his forthcoming album ÷. Incidentally it's the first time the top 2 singles have been new in the chart, never mind by the same artist. We came close in 2013 when One Direction debuted with the #2 and #3 singles. For the record, those songs were Diana and Midnight Memories. Both of them only achieved two weeks in the chart.

13 Mar 17Green Light Lorde13rd No. 1

There is no doubt the battle of the sexes results in a very abnormal chart. Lorde and Ed Sheeran went head to head with new releases, Lorde with her first new single in three and a half years, and Sheeran with his third album. And the winner is....well; both of them. Lorde, who is now based in the States, takes the top single after a sales frenzy where she was selling twice as many units as her #2 competitor Sheeran. He takes the number one album and 13 of the songs into the singles chart.
