Loving it Tempest

1971 has certainly kicked on with a bang (some great tracks/singles) after a slow and lacklustre end to 1970...
Thank you. Don't know how far I will get with 1971 before Christmas but I will try to get as far as I can.

Whatever you do, know that it's greatly appreciated.

It has been wonderful reading what was hip & groovin' as far as artists/singles go in New Zealand during the "Golden Era" (1965- 1973) of contemporary music.

I can't get over how successful Mike Nesmith was in New Zealand after he left The Monkees!!!! That's pretty cool, he didn't have that kind of success in the States once he went solo....
Last edited:
He also had hits with Rio and Cruisin' in 1976/1980.

Was there no chart listing for 31/12/1971? Was looking forward to an ex-Beatle show down Oh well, first week of 72' it is then

Great work by the way Tempest I thoroughly enjoy reading these charts
Hi Tempest, I've really been looking forward to these next lot of charts from 1972-1975 as they are a part of my "Teenage Years," 1972-1978. Keep up the good work.

Regards John.
Hi guys. Thanx for your kind comments. There was no chart on 31 December 1971 but 1972 will begin when I post the first chart tonight. I'm a Beatles fan too so expect some competition from the fab four over the next few years in the charts...
Hi Tempest, you were partly right, It's "God Save Us" by Bill Elliot & The Elastic Oz Band. Released in N.Z. on Apple, Apple 36.

You've mentioned several times that you like to be as accurate as possible, particularly when it comes to the record lables, I've come across a site I thought you might be interested in called "45 Cat", it lists every 7in Single & E.P. ever released world wide including N.Z. & Australia. You can search by Artist, Lable or Song.

Regards John.
Thanx John. I go to that site all the time. It's pretty good eh. I was just writing up what the NZ Listener wrote but I am trying to be accurate at the same time.
I have just added Hi-Fliers (as it was called back then) for charts on 14 February, 23 May, 30 May and 17 October 1969. If anyone has any others from 1969 or earlier years back to 1966 please let me know.
Hi, Tempest.
I'm a bit confused about "Nickel Song" which entered the top 20 on 28/5/71. According to Dean Scapolo's NZ Music Charts book, the version that chartered was Melanie's but you've recorded it as the New Seekers' version. Can you enlighten me?
Love your work, by the way!
It's definitely 'The New Seekers'. The original New Zealand chart shows it as that. Both versions were released in 1971. Melanie's version was actually a B-side. They both sound very similar, but on listening to them both I can say the New Seekers version was the one I remembered played on the radio. 'Oldies' stations seem to play the Melanie version, but as most of us know, they haven't a clue what went on before they were D.J's.
The charts I list here were actually taken straight out of The Listener.
If you go right back to the early 60's the trend back then was someone wrote the song whilst someone else recorded it. Often many artists recorded the same song which gave the song several entries. That is what is happening here.
A similar thing happened in 1980 when Daytrip To Bangor appeared in the same chart by Fiddlers Dram and NZ's own Cathy And The Cucumbers.
You are correct John, and the chartrun for 'Nickel' song' is under 'The New Seekers' for it's entire chartrun in New Zealand. This brings up the question on why Dean would have it as Melanie when he would have used the same source and You and I. I'm positive it's not listed as Melanie anywhere. You may want to ask him directly.
Many thanks to you both for clarifying that! Another mystery solved!
Hello again

First half of 1971 seems good

Oct - The Rumour hit is L'enfant not L'eafant
Dec - Cher's hit - no apostrophe in Gypsys

On to 1972. Cheers
Done
Hello, again!
Here's another mystery, this one's for the chart of 15/10/71. Dean Scapolo lists "Get It On" as being by the band Chase, not T Rex. This time they're not different versions of the same song, they're completely different songs. Although Wikipedia doesn't mention the song's chart-action in NZ on their article about the band Chase, in their T Rex Discography article, they list "Get It On" as not making the NZ top 20. Wikipedia's chart positions for the other T Rex songs correspond to your records.
What do you think?
Hi
I can't speak for Dean but I got my charts directly out of the NZ Listener. I've noticed Wikepedia is not completely accurate in some entries. I can assure you that Get It On was definitely by T Rex.

Here's the thing about 'Get it on'. The Listener as John has stated published the artist as 'Chase'. I personally hadn't heard of the song (I listened to it on Youtube). It was however released in NZ in 1971. However on the 45cat.com site on the Epic label for 1971 it is the 4th of 13 releases for the year, meaning that to enter the charts mid October was unlikely. The same titled song by T.Rex' did have decent airplay and on the Parlophone label was about the 16th release on that label for 1971 out of about 27 releases. this means this was the most likely artist to chart at that time of the year. However, as it is historically 'nailed' in the charts and no-one to verify if it was a mistake, 'Chase' will have to remain as the charted version.
