The 1974 Pop-O-Meter chart continued on from 1973 and was based on what they called 'measured sales'. In 1973 there were quite a few charts not published or with positions missing. 1974 is worse but having said that, I do have a full set. My thanks to Dean Scapolo for helping me fill in the gaps.

I don't know what happened with this chart as it is exactly the same as the previous week. Can anyone shed any light on it. This chart was not published in the NZ Listener Last edited:
Yeah, I can explain. The first 3 weeks of 1974 was a summer break and the first chart of 1974 was published in January 25 of that year, with David Bowie topping the chart. If you go to wikipedia to find number one singles of 1974 in New Zealand it will explained it
Thanx Kevin. My records show two charts before the Wikepedia site does; they are listed above. Charts published in NZ Listener at the start of 1974 were largely missing as you will see over the next few posts.
This chart was not fully published in the NZ Listener.

Hi Tempest, it's probably a silly question, but shouldn't the "Bobby Crush" version of the "Sting" be classed as a "Re-Entry" ? Considering his version left the charts on the 28-6-74???
I agree completely John but as you will see over the next few charts, it gets very confusing. I decided to just go with how the chart was published in NZ Listener. Would be interesting to see what other people think. I can easily change it. I will post the next chart some time today. Last edited:

Regarding the above comments, I'm happy with you following & posting the original publications. I find that in it's self interesting... even if it is flawed in one sense or another due to the chart publishers.
It gives it a greater sense of history as to how they documented these things in a different time... I love it
Thanx Joe. That's what I am trying to do; to portray the charts in a historically correct way, even if I do from time to time adjust the song title/artist so it reads correctly. Last edited:

Hi Tempest, you're right it is starting to get confusing, because according to "Dean Scapolo's" chart book neither "Bobby Cruch's" version or "The Ragtimers" version appears to even get a mention, which makes me wonder how accurate his book is.
I'm not sure why Dean did that. I have his book too, and I've noticed recently some chart dates are inaccurate with the actual chart. At the time I researched these charts I found it very confusing too. All I could do, though, was go with what was actually published.
Note there is now only one entry for The Sting/The Entertainer. This time it goes to Marvin Hamlish at #16. There are no changes now through to the end of the chart run.

W R Freeman in his book NZ Top 20 Singles lists Bobby Crush The Sting but not the Ragtimers. Freeman's book was the first NZ chart book published in the early 90s. It includes Lever Hit Parade info but only lists tracks that have made the Top 20.
Hi Tempest & Fred, could either of you tell me if "The N.Z. Top 20 Singles" book is still available & if so where can I buy a copy? I've already got a copy of "Deans" book plus other "Top 40" books for each Australian state & I'd be interested to get a copy of "W.R. Freeman's" book as well.

The Show Must Go On - Three Dog Night/Leo Sayer - why a re-entry on May, 17. 1974? On May, 10 it was at #19 in its 2nd week! And also, from whom you have the charts of 11th and 18th of january 1974? KEVIN (guest) said, that the first chart of 1974 was published in january, 25. So, who is right?
When I collected these charts I got them straight out of the NZ Listener. Missing charts have been supplied from Dean Scapolo who got them directly from the original source. The chart for 18 January 1974 had last weeks positions which correspond to the 11 January chart and not the 21 December 1973 chart. These chart when published had three columns: This Week; Last Week and Two Weeks Ago; so from that, missing charts can be collated. The Show Must Go On - Three Dog Night/Leo Sayer is a mistake which I have corrected. Thanx for pointing that out. I am 100% confident these charts are correct. Last edited:

Rock And' Roll Heaven - The Righteous Brothers
FORECAST 1. Makin' Music For Money - Kenny Rogers and the First Edition 2. What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted - Jimmy Ruffin 3. Roll On - B.W. Stevenson 4. A Little Bit Of Good - Sam And Dave
Note the Jimmy Ruffin song was actually released in 1966. It failed to chart in New Zealand. Also, interesting point, the Kenny Rogers song was a NZ only single. Last edited:
Re:John Ure, Warwick here. Just e-mail me via my login name. Also on the subject of 'The Sting' or 'The Entertainer' sometimes we just have to do what we think is best. There can be a variety of puzzles to solve. I considered the only version getting any airplay as the Marvin Hamlisch version. The actual title/artist being : Music from "The Sting" Featuring Marvin Hamlisch on piano. Phew! But as John says, he has taken it directly off the charts. Believe me some of these pop chart books will never get done, because you can spend a huge number of hours on the research. A site I use lately is: 45cat.com. Here you can view the actual picture of the label. Even then the title can be different, such as "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place" as apposed to "We've gotta etc etc". Back to the Sting. Yes, I've noticed a stuff up in my book too . I haven't listed The Ragtimers at all, but must have accidently 'joined' it to the Bobby Crush version. My book should have had them both at one week each, but I have Bobby's on two weeks....Doh!
Thanx Warwick and well said. When I think of the research I did in to getting these charts as correct as possible must be staggering, not to mention time spent trying to find missing charts from The Lever Hit Parade.
No worries John, glad to be able to help. I can only edit or delete my own messages. I suggest you get in touch with the administrator of this website via the contact tab at the top of the page. I'm sure it can be deleted there.

Gees, how did that happen. I know that song well too. All fixed Fred and thanx. I was fortunate to interview Alastair Riddell on the radio years ago. What a true gentleman. He is very underrated in New Zealand and as good as anything Bowie could dish out. Such a pity. I have his first album but trying to find the others is near impossible. Did you know Eddie Raynor, the Split Enz keyboard player, was on the album Space Waltz, as was Brent Eccles who went on to play for Citizen Band (that also has a Split Enz connection), Streettalk and Aussie band The Angels?

The Love I Feel - Annie Whittle/The Yandall Sisters
Note the #20 position The Love I Feel is actually two versions by two separate artists Annie Whittle and The Yandall Sisters. Interesting to note this time, both artists are kiwis.
This chart was not published in the NZ Listener Last edited:
The song was a finalist on TV show Studio One. A songwroting contest. Annie Whittle version featured on the show The Yandalls being a cover recorded by EMI The John Hanlon track at #11 also featured on Studio One.
Thanx Fred. I remember it well. I have the records from previous years. 20 Studio One Hits volumes 1 and 2. And the Yandall Sisters version appears on 20 Solid Gold Hits Volume 10. Last edited:
Thanks as always Tempest... Awesome work, especially when considering how difficult it must of been to come up with a concise chart for each week when numerous amounts of chart information was not published in 1974.
Thanx Joe. One more 1974 chart to come plus the annual chart. It was challenging finding all of the 1974 charts but Dean Scapolo was amazing filling in the gaps. I will start work on 1975 after my holiday.
