Here are the Top 100 singles of 2017, so far, based on points. This chart is dated 26 June, 2017 and consists of the first six months only. There were 138 songs in the Top 40 during those six months, 29 more than last year. Also, kiwi tracks were also well down. This year there were only 6 local songs in the chart compared to 2 last year. It may appear to be up but if you take the 5 songs from Lorde out of the equation, that leaves only one. Anyway, here is the Top 100. If you would like to see the next 38, please let me know.

Yeah for some reason kiwi music doesn't chart well these days. 2017 was a better year for kiwis though, largely due to Lorde and Six60 who took 6 each of the 14 kiwi songs to chart in 2017. Watch this space, more to come for my 2017 review.
A major singles statistic was smashed this year. I will post more soon but in 1976 Abba spent 143 weeks in the singles charts with their various singles. Ed Sheeran broke that statistic this year in style by spending 164 weeks in the chart across 16 singles. Full list will follow soon.
Here's a few chart statistics for the Singles Chart, updated to the end of 2017:

This Is What You Came For - Calvin Harris feat. Rihanna
An Englishman dominated the singles and albums chart this year, breaking records and re-writing the rulebok as he went. It began on 16 January when Ed Sheeran debuted Shape Of You and Castle On The Hill in the Top 2. That may have been the eighth time we have seen the Top 2 singles as new entries but it stayed that way for 8 weeks. The week they slipped a knotch, his third album ÷ debuted at the top with all 16 tracks appearing in the Singles Chart. Debuting inside the Top 2 and listing all sixteen album tracks in the Singles chart are both firsts for one artist. As a result, the chart rules had to change. Rule 3.1.2 on Artist Appearance Limitation states “in the first week of an album’s release, the named artist(s) may achieve up to 4 new entries into the Top 40.” The rule may had changed but not before Kendrick Lamar debuted nine hits from his new album DAMN. Sheeran finished the year with 25 weeks on top of the albums chart, 16 weeks on top of the Singles Chart and 164 weeks in the singles chart, breaking the record set by Abba back in 1976. He also took the most singles in a calandar year statistic from Michael Jackson and Justin Bieber’s record set at 11. Sheeran had 16. Lorde was the biggest kiwi artist. Second album Melodrama produced six Top 40 singles with all 11 tracks and a remix entering the NZ Singles Chart. No doubt she would have had them all in the Top 40 had the rules not changed. Six60 got around that rule releasing six singles in six weeks from their new EP Six60(EP). As a result, all of them appeared in the Singles Top 40. There was one other single that put up a fight for the 2017 number one. Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee took their remix of Despacito to the top of the chart for 13 weeks, joining Drake, and Sheeran in threatening the record for most consecutive weeks at the top, currently held by Boney M. Longevity continues in both Top 40’s with several entries clocking up a large number of weeks. Ed Sheeran, and Justin Timberlake both took singles past the 40 week mark whilst Adele, Sheeran, Sam Smith, Six60 and Justin Bieber all had albums over 100 weeks in the chart. Kiwi’s thankfully, had more single entries in this years chart but had it not been for Lorde and Six60 taking 12 of them, we would have been looking at two rather than the years total of 14. With so much kiwi talent out there at the moment there is defiantly room for improvement here. With the current trend in digital streaming it appears 2018 could be more of the same as chart rules and records continue to be challenged. Interesting times indeed!!
