Chart Beat - 4 January, 2021

We start the year with six re-entry singles and one new entry.
29-year old Ed Sheeran throught it was time he released a new single so put Afterglow out as a Christmas present for fans. The result is a #12 entry for his 39th hit. He explained that it's not a single from a new album; just a song he loves. He also takes album ÷ on to 200 weeks. That’s the fifth album to do so in the history of the chart.
Playboi Carti has the only new album. Whole Lotta Red is Jordan Carter's second long player and second NZ hit album. Debuting at #7 it raises the bar from his last disc, Die Lit ffrom 2018 that only managed a #27 peak.

With my annual chart review underway I missed another broken chart record last week. On 4 April 1964 The Beatles took out the Top 5 on the American charts. They also had the Top 6 for 3 April 1964 on the 2SM chart in Sydney. In New Zealand they had the Top 2 on 13 February 1964 with the Lever Hit Parade. Abba matched the record on 17 December 1976 as did Ed Sheeran on 6 January 2017 by taking the Top 2. Last week our very own L.A.B. went one better by having the Top 3 and setting a new record. They hold their position this week.
Two more singles reach the 30 week mark. The first is Dreams from Fleetwood Mac which has taken 2178 chart weeks to make it. The other is Savage Love by Jawsh 685 & Jason DeRulo. The third single in the history of the chart also makes it to 70 weeks. That honour goes to Catching Feelings from DRAX Project.
We have tow new entry singles in the Top 40. Justin Bieber lists Anyone at #13 which was recorded on 30 December and rush released two days later. It's the Canadian's 36th hit single.
SZA has the other newbie. Born Solána Rowe, the American singer, rapper, and songwriter first hit our charts in 2018 taking All The Stars to #2. Now, three years later, her second hit, Good Days, debuts at #23.
No new entries on the album chart in our usual quiet start to the year.
Over on the compilations chart we are close to a new record. The Great New Zealand Songbook peaked at 93 weeks back in 2011 taking the record for most weeks in the Compilation Chart. This week, Ten Guitars: Homegrown Heroes Vol. 2 goes on to 92 weeks.
The first new album for 2021 debuts on the compilations chart. 2021 EDM: Best Of Techno, Trance, House, Progressive & Dance Party Anthems is new at #5

Only one new single in this weeks Top 40 and the American does it in style.
Olivia Rodrigo is new to our charts and more well-known for her role as Paige Olvera on the Disney Channel series Bizaardvark. She also played a role in High School Musical. Her debut single goes all the way to the top on entry. Drivers Licence is taken from her forthcoming EP and has already topped the charts in Netherlands, Ireland, Norway and the UK.
Another newcomer has the highest new album. American country singer Morgan Wallen released his first album back in 2018. That was If I Know Me which peaked at #13 in the US but failed here. It's his second album, Dangerous: The Double Album, which breaks the NZ chart. It brings together seven previously released singles and a collaboration with Diplo, and is a generous album clocking in 96 minutes over 30 songs.
Englishman Passenger (aka Michael Rosenberg) has the other new entry. Songs For The Drunk And Broken Hearted is his seventh NZ hit album with all profits going to the UK Eden Reforestation Project.
Ram Drum And Bass Annual 2021 rounds off this weeks new enries with a #10 slot in the Compilation chart.
Also on the Compilation chart, Ten Guitars: Homegrown Heroes Vol 2 makes it to 93 weeks and ties with The Great New Zealand Songbook for most weeks charted.
