Intrigued to see this selling so well on iTunes here in Oz, so thought I would give it a listen through, and thought it was pretty average. It looks like I might have to get used to it though, as it looks like it might somehow get to #1 and knock Wiz Khalifa off the top spot.

After a little Wikipedia research, it turns out she is Conrad Sewell's sister and this song is a cover of Lesley Gore song of the same title.
*****
A decent cover which I simply adore for some reason.
***
The Love Child promos on TV are to blame for this being relevant. The raps are mediocre and the chorus is boring and uneventful. I don't like this at all. A future #1? Hope not. 2.9.
***
I've always liked the original and Grace is a decent enough singer to not ruin the chorus so I can still enjoy that but the raps suuuuuuuuck and that stop/start jolting through the verses is incredibly annoying.

Chorus is nice and both artists contribute well. The key change towards the end is also quite lovely. Where this falters however is how the beat awkwardly jolts all over the place mainly during the verses, really takes the attention away from the otherwise solid melodies. 3.5
****
This is in the spotlight due to combinations of nepotism & what are essentially legal work-arounds for payola that achieve the same effect. I try my hardest to make sure I don't solely support major label artists and I think if more people did, things would be a little better. For instance, Western Australian singer Grace Woodroofe who adopted the mononym before this singer did, hence why I will refer to her in an eccentric way for the course of this review.

Now that I have that out of the way, I can go back to applauding this for bravery. Why you ask? Well a few reasons:

-I'm posting about this on the internet. It's a well noted fact that the internet really has an issue with women, as cesspools like theredpill & #gamerg8 show.
-Grace [QLD] is making her debut single a cover of the grandmother of all feminist anthems.
-Lesley Gore passed away about a month before this track was released, it takes a lot of chutzpah to cover an artist like that.
-Lesley Gore was a vocal powerhouse. Grace [QLD] goes even so far as to mimic the famous 1964 live version Lesley performed, which is really calling for high expectations.
-"You Don't Own Me" is a song that totally doesn't work in today's pop climate. Lesley's recording goes for like two minutes which is just way too short for 2015, and why they have to casually hide the fact that all Grace [QLD] is singing is a chorus, because...
-They added a rippity rapper to the track. One who isn't Eminem either, so the average 9gag user is probably in distress. I'm undecided on whether or not I'm for his contribution, as it's on the right topic but I can't help but feel it slightly diminishes the point of the song. She shouldn't need someone else to tell you that she's strong and independent, she does it herself and it's a powerful statement.
-This was released on Sony and sounds absolutely nothing like their usual complete antithesis of bravery.
-This does not even sound on trend with anything, it's just doing its own modern spin on the original and it rather pays off.

To go on from one of my previous points, I think Grace [QLD] does a good job with her performance. It's a tall order of course, but she doesn't try to go beyond her limits and it pays off pretty well. And of course, yay for feminism, and yay for getting more people to listen to a classic which doesn't get quite as much attention as it probably should.

Awesome cover!

This track is frustratingly uneven. The cover parts are nice and it's good to have the track updated to introduce it to a new audience. But that rapper is just awful and the production is so messy that I can't fully enjoy it. I sit listening and waiting for the lady to sing. 3.5 for me

The production kills me now. What's up with the constant stop start thing. It's not good, very amateurish. Which is a shame because the parts that 'Grace' sings are actually very good.

Pretty average all up for me, though it does have it's moments where I really think I could have liked it. 3.4*

*****
Kudos to a single bringing my interest to a song I was never really that excited about. I heard this regularly since its quick climb to #1 but wasn't rating it much at all - was just indifferent to it. But this was destined to draw me in and it is down to the singing and production. Grace's vocals are amazing and I like the melody, instrumental arrangements and tone shifts. G-Eazy is reasonable with his contributions, well entrenched into this version of the song now after so many listens. Over time this has gone from "no you shouldn't really dare to cover this" to "wow I want to hear that again".
***

Long story short: Solide, abgerundete Vier mit Potential.

*****
Interesting and innovative cover of the Lesley Gore classic from a teenage girl who is old enough to be her grand-daughter.

Great feminist anthem which shows society still has a long way to go before girls and women are treated as equals.

I associate this with Christmas time so it's only fair I rate it now.
Even though the production here is all over the place, it sounds very good to these ears. It has quite a sexy sound. I don't care much about G-Eazy, but he doesn't bother me either. Grace is really talented however, she has a great voice and her ad libs after the last chorus are everything.
****
Abgerundete 4.
