**** It's a gorgeous and heartbreaking piano ballad about the death of his mother and it's incredibly effective. He delivers a fantastic vocal which only furthers the sadness he's wearing on his sleeve with the lyrics. The line "The day that they took you, I wish it was me instead" is most effective, especially with the small break his voice gives on "instead". I do love the tonal shift that comes with the pre-chorus, the song begins by talking about the sadness but moves to a happier place discussing positive things and moving on but never forgetting. The production also swells through the pre-chorus and then ramps up during the chorus in an uplifting way. This allows the song to not be a total cry-fest and instead something which could be an effective coping mechanism. I'm very impressed with this. |
